[Hong Kong] Identity Verification with iAM Smart

Carousell partners with iAM Smart to enable identification against official government records in certain situations where an elevated risk of scams in present. This means that as a Carousell user you may be required to verify your identity depending on the categories of items you buy or sell. 

We store the minimum required amount of information in a highly secure way, and will never share your information with other users. We only share information with authorities in response to an official, formal order to do so. The purpose of iAM Smart verification is to make it more difficult for bad actors to commit scams, which creates a more secure and safe marketplace for everyone. 

When must I verify my identity?

This feature is available only for a selected group of users. You may be requested to verify your identity when you:

• Log in using a new device
• Chat in certain high-risk categories
• List in Property, Tickets & Vouchers category

Listings will be hidden and chat will be blocked if you do not complete the identity verification. 


 

Note that this requirement is different from the identity verification required to Withdraw your balance.*

*A separate requirement for KYC (Know-your-customer) verification would be required if you successfully transact with 'Buy' button in order to Withdraw your earnings. This KYC verification is conducted and collected by our payments partner, Stripe. 

What personal information will be provided when I verify my identity?

We will be retrieving information from MyInfo that contains your Principal Name, Date of Birth and Registered Address. We will not be storing any other information and your information is encrypted and will never be shared with other users. 

How will my information be used?

We take your privacy very seriously. The information you provide during this process is governed by our Privacy Policy and it is safely secured with us. The information you provide will be used to help us create a trusted marketplace and protect our users against fraudulent behaviour. Additionally, where required by applicable laws, we may provide information to government regulatory agencies to assist with criminal investigations. 

Will my information be shared with other Carousell users?

We will never share your personal information with other Carousell users without your consent. 

Is it definitely safe to transact with a user who has verified his/her identity?

Verification of identity for a user does not provide complete assurance that transacting with the user is safe. You are advised to protect yourself by following our safety tips for transacting and using Buyer Protection when possible.

Can I withdraw my iAM Smart Identity Verification after performing the verification?

Users can choose to withdraw their SingPass Identity Verification by submitting a ticket to our customer support team here.
