Carousell Live Breaks Policy
Carousell Live lets Hosts run live video shows in which sealed products are opened on camera and their contents allocated to buyers who purchased in advance (a "Live Break"). This policy sets out what can be listed, how a Live Break must be run, and the safeguards that apply to buyers.
This Policy is in addition to, and should be read together with, the Carousell Terms of Service and the applicable Carousell Live guidelines, each as updated from time to time. Any defined terms not otherwise defined in this Policy have the meaning ascribed to them in the Carousell Terms of Service.
A Host is solely responsible for ensuring that its Mystery Products and Live Breaks comply with all applicable laws in every jurisdiction in which they are offered or accessed, including any laws relating to lotteries, gambling, games of chance, and consumer protection. Carousell does not represent or warrant that any Mystery Product or Live Break format is lawful in any jurisdiction. A Host remains solely responsible for ensuring its own compliance with applicable law in each jurisdiction in which it operates.
1. Definitions
| Term | Meaning |
| Mystery Product | A product where the buyer knows the range of possible items they could receive, but cannot know the exact item(s) until it is revealed (for example: mystery boxes, blind boxes, advent-calendar-style products, and trading card packs). |
| Live Break | A Live Show in which a Host opens a sealed Mystery Product on camera in real time, and allocates and ships the revealed items to buyers in accordance with the break rules disclosed for that show. |
2. Listing Requirements
Carousell refers to a product used in a Live Break as a "Mystery Product." A product may only be listed as a Mystery Product if the listing meets all of the following:
-
It falls within a category Carousell has designated as eligible for Live Breaks. As of the date of this policy, these categories are as follows:
- Trading Cards (Sports)
- Trading Cards (Sports)
- Blind Boxes
It is manufactured by the original brand or manufacturer, sold sealed and in its original packaging, and has not been assembled, altered, or repackaged by the Host. Randomised bundles that a Host puts together itself are not permitted.
It does not contain any item prohibited or restricted under Carousell's List of Prohibited Content.
Its listing description clearly discloses: (a) the possible items a buyer may receive, with images where practical; (b) the quantity, category, and variation of those items; and (c) their value.
3. How a Live Break Must Be Structured
For a Live Break format to be permitted on the Carousell platform: a buyer must know, before they pay, exactly what they are purchasing — for example, a specific spot, unit, or selection — and how their outcome will be decided, even though the specific item itself is only revealed once the product is opened. A Host may not run a Live Break in a format that leaves this undisclosed or leaves the outcome to chance beyond the buyer's own advance choice.
3.1 Formats that typically satisfy this test
A buyer may purchase an entire Mystery Product, or a specifically identified unit or position within one (such as a single pack, box, case, or a specific numbered card position within a pack), and receive whatever item corresponds to that unit or position once it is opened (a "Spot Break"). Alternatively, a buyer may select a specific team, character, player, or category before the product is opened, and receive whatever matches that selection (a "Team Break").
These are examples, not an exhaustive list of permitted formats — see the table in Section 3.2 below for further formats that do, and do not, satisfy this test. Each of these examples satisfies the test above because the buyer's entitlement — the specific unit, position, or selection purchased — is fixed and disclosed before they pay, even though the specific item within it is only revealed once opened.
3.2 Formats Carousell does not permit
Regardless of how a format is marketed, Carousell will not permit a Live Break where:
the outcome is not the buyer's own advance choice — for example, items are assigned randomly (sometimes marketed as a "Random Card Break"), buyers take turns selecting after the fact in a fixed or drafted order (a "Draft-Style Break"), cards are passed along a chain until a buyer chooses to keep or pass one ("Train" formats), or a buyer's result depends on comparing pulls against, or the purchases of, other buyers (formats sometimes marketed as "King of the Hill" or head-to-head "Battle" breaks);
a further prize or incentive is layered on top of the item purchased — for example, a bonus reward for pulling a particular item (a "Bounty"), points that accumulate across shows and can be redeemed for discounted or free entries (a "Points Program"), or extra items unlocked by a run of consecutive purchases; or
the product is sold as individual chance-based draws rather than a complete, disclosed unit — for example, selling a single "pull" from an undefined stack or bin rather than a specific pack, box, or case (a "Pull Game").
The table below illustrates how this applies:
| What happens | Permitted on Carousell Live? |
| A buyer purchases an entire sealed pack, box, or case and receives everything inside once it is opened live. | Yes |
| A buyer selects a specific team, character, or player before the break and receives all matching items. | Yes |
| A buyer purchases an official blind box, and the Host opens it live to show the contents. | Yes |
| Items are assigned to buyers at random, without any advance selection. | No |
| Buyers take turns selecting items after the break, in a fixed order. | No |
| A buyer's result depends on how it compares to other buyers' pulls in the same break. | No |
| An extra reward is promised if a particular item is pulled. | No |
| Buyers accumulate points across shows that can be redeemed for discounted or free entries. | No |
| Continued purchases by other buyers unlock bonus items or discounts for everyone. | No |
| A buyer purchases an individual "pull" from an undefined stack or bin, rather than a specific sealed unit. | No |
4. Buyer Requirements
Live Break purchases are subject to the following. Carousell may introduce or adjust these progressively:
A buyer must enter valid credit card payment details on the Carousell platform before making any Live Break purchase, consistent with the payment requirements that already apply to participation in Carousell Live under the Carousell Terms of Service.
5. Compliance and Enforcement
If a Host is found to have breached this policy, Carousell may take enforcement action against the Host's account, including suspending or terminating the Host's access to Carousell Live. Repeated breaches will result in more significant penalties.
