[Malaysia] New e-commerce rules in Malaysia: What sellers need to know
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has introduced the Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2024 (CPETTR 2024).These regulations set out new requirements for online sellers and marketplace operators to strengthen consumer protection in the digital space.
Starting 24 June 2025, these new regulations will apply to all online marketplaces in Malaysia, including Carousell. They’re designed to:
- Make online transactions safer
- Protect buyers from scams and misinformation
- Help sellers like you build trust and credibility
👀 What’s changing?
In line with CPETTR 2024, sellers are now required to provide some basic information on their profile:
- Your full name
- Identity number
- Your address
- Your mobile number
- Your email address
✅ What should I do next?
We’ve made it easy for you to comply.
1. Fill in your required info
Go to ‘Edit profile’ in your settings page and fill in the relevant details.
✨ You’ll have the option to show or hide your name and address on your profile—everything else stays private.
2. Use Bahasa Malaysia in your listings (Optional for now)
We recommend adding a Bahasa Malaysia version of your title and description. You can keep English or Chinese versions too—just make sure BM comes first.
3. Upload certifications (if needed)
Selling items like electronics, cosmetics, or food?
Be sure to upload valid certificates like SIRIM, NPRA, or HALAL to your listing. This keeps everything above board.
🔒 Will buyers see my personal info?
You’re in control of what’s shared.
Only your name and address may be visible to buyers—and only if you choose to display them. All other info stays hidden and is kept safe with us.
⚠️ What happens if I don’t comply?
The law comes with some heavy penalties, including fines or even jail time for serious breaches. We’ll also need to block chats or hide listings if you don’t follow the rules.
So, it’s a good idea to make these updates now and stay ahead.
