Recruitment Privacy Statement
This Recruitment Privacy Statement describes how Carousell Pte. Ltd and its subsidiaries, affiliates, and related corporations (collectively, "Carousell") handle your personal data in connection with Carousell’s recruitment processes.
Collection, use and disclosure of your personal data
The personal data we collect depends on the requirements of the role and is done in line with applicable laws and regulations, including labour laws of the country where the job position is based. Personal data that we collect for recruitment purposes include:
- Personal data you provide to us in your curriculum vitae and cover letter/email such as your contact details, demographics information, employment, education and training details, contact information of your nominated referees;
- Any personal data that you provide to us during an interview; and
- Information you provide in relation to your right to work documentation.
By providing us with any information relating to a third party (e.g. information of the individual you are representing and/or referees), you represent to us that you have validly obtained the consent of the third party to provide us with their information for the respective purposes.
By submitting your curriculum vitae and application for employment, whether directly to Carousell Pte. Ltd. or indirectly, including but not limited through an external recruiter, you agree for Carousell, to use and disclose your curriculum vitae and any other personal data provided by you for the following purposes ("Purposes") and for any other purposes that we notify you of:
- facilitating, processing, administering, managing, maintaining and/or terminating your application for employment with Carousell;
- evaluating and determining your suitability for employment with Carousell (including conducting technical skill assessments), carrying out due diligence or other screening activities as may be required in relation to your application for employment, (including background checks) in accordance with legal or regulatory obligations (whether based on Singapore law or non-Singapore law) which Carousell is expected or required to comply with or our risk management procedures that may be required by law (whether Singapore or a foreign law) or that may have been put in place by us;
- to conduct reference checks in accordance with Carousell's relevant policies;
- to contact you via electronic mail, text message and voice call to receive updates in relation to your application for employment;
to consider you for positions other than those which you have applied;
to use artificial intelligence-assisted tools to analyse sections of your application materials and generate a compatibility assessment to help our recruitment team identify candidates whose profiles are relevant to a specific role and to identify the use of artificial intelligence (“AI”) in your application process; and
to contact you in connection with ongoing recruitment opportunities;
in accordance with the applicable personal data regulations such as the Personal Data Protection Act 2012 and our Privacy Policy,
You further agree that:
Carousell may share such information and personal data with any third party service providers who will assist us to and/or perform certain aspects in relation to the Purposes (as the case may be), such as providing reference checks, technical skill assessment services or screening services. Such third parties will only have access to your personal data to the extent necessary to perform their functions;
the said third party service providers may share any information and personal data provided to them through other sources (the "Third Party Data") with Carousell for the Purposes;
Carousell may collect, use and disclose the Third Party Data for the Purposes, in accordance with our Privacy Policy; and
Where permitted by law, we may receive personal data about you from third parties (such as referees or background screening providers) in connection with your application. Such data will be processed solely for recruitment-related purposes and in accordance with this Statement.
The third party vendors that we work with are:
Google Gemini
Tactiq
You may find the privacy policies of our third party vendors as follows:
By providing us with any information relating to a third party (e.g. information of the individual you are representing, your spouse, children, parents, and/or referees), you represent to us that you have validly obtained the consent of the third party to provide us with their information for the respective purposes.
If your application is unsuccessful, Carousell may continue retain and use your personal data solely for the following purposes (“Additional Purposes”) for a period of no more than two (2) years:
deal with any matter which may arise in connection with your application; and
contact you in connection with ongoing recruitment opportunities, including positions other than what you have applied for.
Use of artificial intelligence in our recruitment process
In the course of our recruitment process, we may also use AI tools to assist in identifying potential candidates, evaluating applications, and supporting recruitment administration. This may include identifying potential role matches based on publicly available professional information or information provided by recruitment partners or sourcing providers, screening CVs for potential role matches, generating summaries of interview conversations, and supporting structured evaluations of candidate suitability.
Specifically, we use an internal AI-powered tool called CarouMatch as part of our candidate screening process. CarouMatch uses Google Gemini to analyse specific sections of your application and generates a compatibility score that helps our recruitment team identify candidates whose profiles are relevant to a specific role. The tool also assesses whether you have used AI tools or technology in your application with us.
CarouMatch is an advisory tool to assist our recruiters — it does not make hiring decisions, does not automatically reject any candidate, and does not alter your status in the recruitment system. Every employment decision remains with a human recruiter or hiring manager. A human reviewer is involved during the screening process.
Carousell does not use your personal data to train or develop AI models. The AI tool we use, Google Gemini, is configured so that your personal data is not used by Google for AI training or modelling purposes.
To protect your personal data, CarouMatch is designed to extract and pass only relevant sections of your application. Excluded fields include your contact details, address, date of birth, and other personal identifiers that have no bearing on the scoring criteria. The information extracted and processed for compatibility scoring is limited to:
your Carousell generated candidate ID;
your name;
your work history (such as company, role, and tenure);
your education and qualifications;
your skills and certifications; and
any salary expectations you have stated.
The compatibility assessment evaluates how well your professional experience, qualifications, and skills match the requirements of the advertised role. The features of your personal data most likely to influence your compatibility score are your work history, education and qualifications, and skills — each assessed against the specific criteria for the role. Your name and candidate ID are processed solely as identifiers and play no part in the scoring assessment. Carousell takes steps to ensure that the scoring process does not operate as a proxy for discrimination.
If you have questions about how CarouMatch assessed your application, would like to request that your application be reviewed independently by a human member of our recruitment team, or would like to provide feedback on your experience of our AI-assisted screening process, you are welcome to write to us at TA@thecarousell.com.
Data Retention
If you accept an offer of employment with us, any relevant personal data collected during your pre-employment period will become part of your employee records and will be retained in accordance with specific country requirements and with the data protection applicable to Carousell employees, which will be provided during the on-boarding process.
If your application is unsuccessful, Carousell may continue retain and use your personal data solely for the following purposes (“Additional Purposes”) for a period of no more than three (3) years, unless you request earlier deletion, solely for the following purposes:
(a) deal with any matter which may arise in connection with your application; and
(b) contact you in connection with ongoing recruitment opportunities, including positions other than what you have applied for.
